Do you think the reinstatement of deposits on containers might get things going in the right direction? With things getting as tough as they are, a deposit on containers could be a really boost for some households that are struggling to keep the lights on and the kids fed!
I think it probably works better the other way round. We had a cosmetic store where you could take your container back to be refilled at a lower price than if you bought it in a new container, and the supermarkets have an increasing number of refill type products too.

The deposit system works on some things, but it is cumbersome for companies to administer and it can cause unnecessary travel to take stuff back to the right place to get the money rather than to the nearest recycling point so in some cases it could be counter productive

With the deposits, the bottles were returned to the grocery store where you purchased them, in most cases. This isn't gathering bottles to take to a recycling center.

This means that the bottles can be returned during the next trip to the grocery store. No uneccessary travel needed.
