Default Milk jugs

I have been using old milk jugs or water jugs to plant seeds. I cut off the top part of it, (and recycle it, of course) and fill the bottoms with potting soil. I plant seeds and watch them grow. You can then put them in something more decorative, if you like.

Great idea never really thought of this. Thank you. AM going to try this. I sure have enough milk cartons.

We've done this, too. We also use milk jugs for other things like storing water to replenish fish tanks (so the chemicals in the water can evaporate out a bit), watering plants, and freezing drinks for future use.

If you keep the top half of the milk jug / bottle, you can use it in the garden as a mini-cloche for frost protection.

Yes, they are very useful for many things! One of my friends uses two of them as weights for her arms, and adds more water to increase the weight. She doesn't have the space for her weight lifting equipment in her apartment, and she is very much into not having floppy arms!

I do have friends who love gardening and they use old milk jugs or water jugs to plant seeds. So when we get a handful of these jugs at home, I bring it to them so that they can use it for their hobby.

Washed out really well, we have several of those in the kitchen and shed in case the water for some reason (like an earthquake, etc, god forbid) is undrinkable. Once a month or so we'll pour the water on the plants and refill with fresh. I was told you could add a spoon or two of bleach to the water but that doesn't sound too delectable to me. Course if we ever have to drink them we'd probably be glad to drink whatever we have.

If you cut them at an angle, they also make great scoops with ready made handles which are ideal for scooping dry goods or pet foods.

I have used them for scoops also but I really like the idea of planting in them. I think the boys would like to do something like this also. Thanks for sharing the ideas.

Some of the best recycling ideas come from children: they're so imaginative and creative! I remember when I used to watch Sesame Street, there were all sorts of suggestions on how to recycle things like egg cartons and milk jugs and turn them into toys and art projects.
