Default Water Down Under starts today

Top water brains meet - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Let's hope they come up with better suggestions than more dams or desal plants. Let's take a serious look at sustainable water usage in Australia, the excuse that the rain didn't fall in the catchement area is getting a little old!

I don't hear much about the Australia end, so what exactly are they trying to address? I hope the meeting goes over well.

Yes, good luck to everyone involved. I had never thought about Australia, which I believe is mostly arid and an island to boot has to have some real problems regarding potable water.

I don't have the figures in front of me but Australia is something like 70% desert and arid land so everyone hugs the coast. We've been through a major drought that finally looks like it's broken in some places but some dam levels got critically low. I'm torn in that I believe we need a new strategy but I'm against desalination due to the cost, power usage and envrionmental impact. People are set against grey water use and recycling so I hope they can come up with something! More grants for rain water tanks wouldn't hurt.

Oh wow. I didn't realize Australia had so much desert and arid land. Have they come up with anything useful yet?
