"Even if you lost only half of the first-year ice this year – which would be average – you are still in for a very low ice extent this summer," says Serreze.

I haven't heard that the ice cap could be gone as early as this year.....but I know it's quite tenuous....where do you hear this from?

Default Where's the rest of the article?

It's hard to comment intelligently when we only have one small portion of the story. I'd be very interested in reading the whole article so I can see everything in context and more detail.

I was watching a documentary about the problems that polar bears are having: they are drowning, because they don't have enough Ice to get on to and keep going. That is definitely one of the things that is already showing in the North Pole.

I have seen a story or two about this as well.

The permafrost is melting away too, meaning that old burial grounds and cemetaries are being exposed, and bodies will probably have to be moved...yuck, and that methane released from the soil and the rotting vegetation could become a problem.

This is pretty scary actually and it just goes to show that the environment is suffering. We have a lot to answer for as mankind has caused the problems on the environment and we need to be so careful to look after this world. We need to do what we can while we can. One only has to look at the recent cyclone disaster to realise the mess we are in.
