I agree that it would not be a bad idea to wait before replanting. If there was a disease that the tree suffered that was potentially contagious, then you would want it to disipate, and without a tree there to host it I would assume it would.

Be aware that if the roots were large and wide, then the top soil will collapse and leave pits in the turf when the hollow roots finally collapse. We had the same happen here-and the trees that were in the garden not far from it were fine.

This is a bit off-topic, I know, but I'm really happy about this. In our back garden there is a pine stump that a hardy little tree is growing out of! Horrible grammar but I said I was happy. Pine trees are my favorite tree and this one is growing fast!

Molly, I'm constantly surprised and delighted by the way plants in my garden can put up with all sorts of abuse and come springing back.

We have neighbors who have had trees removed because of the large size. Most get the stumps removed. But there are a few who leave the stumps, and they start getting a little branches on the stumps.

Yes, Green, if a plant hazards a place in my garden, it is one tough plant! Our Priest was a horticulturist before he joined the priesthood, and at dinner last weekend he was telling us that the Latin names for plants sound alot like the Latin he says at Mass. He had us in stitches doing all his little priestly hand-jive while intoning the names of plants.

If those stumps are not dug up or pulled up then they will continue to grow because the root system is still attached and growing with in the ground.

An easy way to stop new trees growing from a stump is to pound a few coper coated nails into the base of the stump.

We had a tree cut down two months ago, and the tree guy suggested this technique because I wasn't able to pay for having the stump removed. So far, it has worked like a charm!
