Yes it is better to use natural water without any chemicals. Technology has made the chemicals stronger and more potent which could be harmful to the plants.

Couldn't organic soaps be alright to water plants with? I'd think that regular chemical soaps, etc might be really damaging to plants.

Really, I can confirm that bubble bath, shampoo, conditioner and washing up liquid in diluted form will not kill your plants. I do not use detergent in my washing machine though. I am careful not to flush anything like bleach or other cleaning materials down my sink though. I can't afford to use entirely natural kitchen and bathroom products at the moment, but would do in the ideal world.

I've been looking into reusing rainwater and the like and came across instructions on how to build something useful.

LowesCreativeIdeas.com :: Water-Conserving Rain Barrels

It also gives complete instructions and materials you need for building this water conservatory.

I worked on an organic farm where the couple used gentle biodegradable soap and shampoo and collected shower water in a bucket. They used it on their hardy shrubs and trees and everything responded well.
