Default Wind Energy

Wind energy is generated from wind turbines. When there is enough wind speed in the area, the blades rotate and they generate electricity. Did you know that after a certain maximum wind speed, the wind turbines automatically shuts off? This will prevent the blades of the wind turbines to get blown away by typhoons or hurricanes.

We have discussed placing a vertical wind catcher/windmill on the roof. It would be easier to catch the breeze to turn the windmill than it would be to remove all the trees to catch sunlight!

Would that work? Have you researched this to see if it is feasable? That sounds like a cool (breezy ) idea!

We have thought of doing this. We live close to lake erie and we get a lot of wind. But really have no place to but it.

I had never heard that they automatically shut off. I would love to have my electricity run by wind power. Who knows maybe someday I will be able to.

We have huge wind turbines in some areas of UK. They get a lot of negative press because they are noisy and not terribly attractive, and people say they don't generate enough to make it worthwhile. I think as they are put in the right places we just need to get used to having them. It has to be better than most of the other options.

With the wind turbines everything is location. But I know of a guy that had a set of hundreds of little "turbines" that would rotate wit the slightlest breeze. He put it in the top of his building just to generate extra electricity in the summer for the air conditioner. He saves thousands of dollars. Each little turbine is around 1 foot in diameter, and they are vertically arranged, very light, and connected to batteries. He did it himself, (of course he know how to do it and get the electricity) and it works. So maybe that is an option for people with houses.

This sounds very interesting. I would like to check into this a lot more.

If the turbines are shut off, does this stop the blades from turning in the wind? I imagine that this means that no more power is generated so there would have to be a secondary source of power - or is the power stored in some kind of generator?

I think that turbine power is stored in pretty much the same manner as solar panels keep reserves of energy for overnight and cloudy days.
