Default Reducing energy consumption and waste

What methods are you using to save on energy consumption in your homes and what are some ways that you reduce waste? Obviously, turning off items not in use is the easiest and fastest way to save. I'm looking for little things that might be less obvious but can make a difference.

For example, did you know that dust buildup on your light fixtures and heating vents can reduce the efficiency? A dusty light bulb or fixture can reduce light output by 25% making you think you need a higher wattage than you actually do. I dust all the lamps and lights regularly now since learning this.

I changed all the bulbs to low energy bulbs on the lamps and areas I use the most. I try not to leave anything on "standby" if I can. When I travel, I unplug everything except the fridge. It takes me a little time when I get back to set up clocks on the TV and DvD player, but I know I'm saving money that way. My last electric bill was only 24 dollars, and I live in NYC. That's pretty good!

I've replaced every incandescent bulb in the home with lower wattage fluorescent bulbs. We hardly use hot water for showers. We recycle paper for the printer at home for drafts.
