Default Do you think that the government are doing enough to tackle climate change?

Do you think that the government are doing enough to tackle climate change? If not what could they do more?

I do not think the government are doing enough they should encourage people more and provide incentitives for those who do more for the environment. The government have some programmes in place that help the environment, but they do not do enough, in my opinion.

Which government are we talking about here? I don't think that any of the governments of the industrialised nations is doing enough to tackle climate change. It sems as if they are all willing to talk around the subject and make chest-thumping speeches from political patforms. While I don't think I have all the answers, one initiative I'd love to see take more prominence is the wide-scale promotion of alternative energy sources and a more aggressive weaning off fossils fuels.

I certainly haven't seen any politicians doing anything practical or getting stuck into an environmental project which is what they should be doing.

No, I don't think most governments are doing enough, but I don't think most citizens are doing enough either.

The government is doing next to NOTHING about global warming and climate change.

Why, many of them even try to convince you that it does not even exist!

Oh, and George Dubya is in cohoots with Oil companies anyway. Of course he wouldn't care!

Politicians and oil work hand-in-hand! They are both very slippery characters. I don't think they will ever break that arrangement. If the politicians didn't like that money so much maybe they would start doing something about the climate changes. But as the saying goes "Money talks and bullsh*t walks!"

Yeah I agree but, I also think that politicians sometimes act like puppets giving in to those higher up the ranks from them. It is a shame because someone so high up in power could have such an influence on the environment and could do so much to raise awareness amongst people. They could bring out incentives to those who do the most for the environment and they could get involved with doing things to help the environment. Like you say though money is power and that is what it's about they are not bothered about the environment even though ultimately it affects them too.

Interesting that this is being discussed on a day when a the UN's top climate official has come out and said what needs to be said : "wealthy nations are shirking their duties."

Rich nations must lead on climate change: UN official

He rightfully criticized the long range targets of the US and Japan for 2050. You and I know that by 2050 they'll not be worth the paper they're written on. Governments will have changed, policies will have changed and the ones that set the policies will no longer be in office. Heck, we could have been nuked by then.

Politicians know that by setting such long range targets, no one's going to hold them personally accountable for them actually coming to fruition but they'll get the benefit of the brownie points now for implementing the idea. They can't lose but know they look good spouting empty promises. It's depressing!

That's the way it will always be unless the people stand up and put their foot down on their necks. By the time they finally decide to do something the world will have no hope of surviving.

Thanks for all the interesting links. I do not feel however that the government can really do anything to CONTROL our climates.
