Post Fossil fern point to error in climate models?

Interesting stuff ScienceDirect - Earth and Planetary Science Letters : The Late Cretaceous continental interior of Siberia: A challenge for climate models

Seems that central Siberia used to be like Florida climate-wise during the late Cretaceous period. This is an issue as the climate models predicted it to be a chilly 0 degrees!

There's an interview in the latest NS that gives 3 or 4 possible explainations:
  • Continential drift that the models don't cater for
  • Changes in the Earth's orbit that the models don't cater for
  • The models are wrong, predicting less extreme changes
The last is the one I find the most worrying. The models are wrong because they underestimated the climate change. What does that mean for the forecasts in our current time????

I am going to hope the reason is one of the top two because if the models are less extreme than what's actually going to happen, that's a scary thought to be thinking of.
